Surreal humor, Australian references and reggae-infused new wave both celebrate and gently satirize the band’s homeland.More

Men at Work's Down Under is both a celebration of Australian culture and a witty commentary on how that culture is packaged for the rest of the world. This commentary explores the video's surreal journey through Outback imagery, Vegemite, beer, and increasingly absurd encounters that transform national identity into playful satire. It explains Australian references ranging from local foods and slang to the song's famous travel imagery, while showing how Colin Hay's understated performance contrasts with the escalating visual chaos around him. The discussion also highlights Greg Ham's unforgettable flute melody, the song's subtle reggae influences, and the band's quirky art-rock sensibility that set them apart from many of their new wave contemporaries. Along the way, it reveals how Down Under became an international hit while gently poking fun at the very process of exporting Australian culture, creating a music video that's both affectionate toward its homeland and surprisingly sharp in its social commentary.
