Romantic comedy, surreal library antics and atmospheric synthpop create one of Tears for Fears’ warmest, most charming videos.More

Tears for Fears' Head Over Heels transforms an ordinary library into the setting for an imaginative romantic comedy filled with surreal humor, visual gags, and heartfelt optimism. This commentary follows Roland Orzabal's increasingly determined attempts to win the affection of a librarian, exploring how playful fantasy elements: from flying books and ghostly moments to an unforgettable chimpanzee, reflecting the song's emotional journey without overshadowing its warmth. It also examines the band's spacious synth-pop production, showing how the iconic keyboard introduction, memorable bridge, and uplifting "la la la" finale give the song room to breathe despite its emotional depth. Along the way, the discussion contrasts Tears for Fears' moodier songwriting with contemporaries such as Duran Duran while connecting Head Over Heels to the band's recurring themes of healing, vulnerability, and human connection. The result is a music video whose humor, romance, and cinematic storytelling have helped it remain one of the most beloved classics of the MTV era.
